The Niu Kqi3 Max is an electric scooter with it all: a powerful motor, long range, stylish design, and much more. We had a lot of fun riding it around and were particularly impressed with how well it handled hills. The Kqi3 Max’s front ring headlights have a distinct profile, and the red mechanical disc brakes on the front and rear wheels give it a sports car feel.

To be sure, its actual range is significantly less than its advertised 40-mile range, especially when cruising up hills, but it was more than enough to get us around for a week without recharging. You can also use the Niu app to customize and lock the Kqi3 Max’s ride. However, at 46 pounds, this scooter is quite heavy. If you need to carry this up and down stairs, we recommend the Unagi Model One instead. But if weight is not an issue, this is an excellent electric scooter.

The Hiboy S2 includes a number of features that are unusual for a low-cost electric scooter. These include dual brakes (regenerative and mechanical disk) and lights, not only in the front and back, but also around the scooter’s sides. It not only increases your visibility, but it also has a very cool effect.

I also liked the Hiboy S2’s very clean design, which has few dangling wires and such. The only drawback is its rear latching mechanism, which was a little finicky. The S2’s 350-Watt motor was adequate for most situations, but as with most budget scooters, I found it difficult to ride up hills. Its battery life is adequate for a scooter in this price range, but if you plan to ride frequently, you will need to charge it every couple of days.

If you can get the Hiboy S2 for $399 or less, it’s a great value, as it delivers more than most other scooters at that price.

Best For Kids

Razor E100

Size: 36 x 32.5 x 16 inches    |   Weight: 22 pounds    |   Wheel size: 8-inch inflatable (front), 4.9-inch rubber (rear)    |   Motor: 100-watt, rear-wheel chain drive    |   Battery: Dual 12-volt    |   Max Speed: 10 mph    |   Range: 10 miles/40 minutes    |   Max Rider Weight120 pounds

The Razor E100 is the best electric scooter for parents looking to provide their children with a safe mode of transportation around town. It is available in a variety of colors and includes twist-grip acceleration controls as well as a hand-operated front brake. The E100 tops out at 10 mph but has enough torque to go uphill or over steep bumps. And with 40 minutes of driving time, you’ll have plenty of time to get to and from school, with a pit stop in between.

The Razor E100 comes in a variety of colors and styles, so you should be able to find one that best suits your child’s personality. Just remember to buy them a helmet. One disadvantage of the E100 is that it has a chain-drive motor, which can be noisier than hub motors and may require some maintenance over time. Also, the E100 lacks a bell or reflectors of any kind, so you’ll need to get some from a bike shop to help your child be more visible on the road.
